DANDRUFF
Dry white flakes of skin, on your scalp is known as dandruff.
•          It is not a health risk, but is a source of embarrassment.
•          Some people have the wrong notion that it is because of bad hygiene or washing the hair often - this is a false belief. It is just that people having dandruff shed more skin then others.
•          However some dermatologists suggest that is caused by a yeast fungus that is believed to breed in a combination of sebaceous oil and dead skin cells.
Causes:
•          A family history of dandruff.
•          Excessive sweating of the scalp.
•          Excessive mental and physical stress.
•          Use of alkaline soaps.
•          Cold dry winter season.
•          Psoriasis of scalp.
•          Seborrhoeic dermatitis.
•          Improper carbohydrate and sugar consumption.
•          Nutrient deficiencies – B-complex, essential fatty acids, selenium.
Sign and symptoms:
•          Flakes of skin which may be small and white or large greasy and yellow.
•          Itching on scalp, eyebrows, nose or ears.
•          It can be worse in winters.
Dietary management:
Avoid:
•          Avoid fatty and oily food.
•          Avoid dairy products (except yoghurt) – cheese, cottage cheese and seafood.
•          Avoid sugar, white flour and chocolate
•          Avoid excess alcohol.
•          Avoid stress.
•          Even though dandruff is dry flaking skin do not normally apply excessive oil as it may provide an environment for yeast to breed.
Do:
•          Add one tea spoon of vinegar to the rinsing water after washing your hair.
•          Before washing your hair, apply a mixture of 8 table spoon of pure organic peanut oil and 2 table spoon lemon juice and massage into the scalp. Leave it for 10-15 minutes then shampoo.
•          You can replace oil with coconut milk or coconut water; leave it over night and shampoo.
•          Wash hair with natural, herbal ingredients rather than chemical – take mixture of amla (Indian goose berri) powder, aritha (sapindus Laurifotius) powder and shikakai (Acacia Concinna) powder, soak it in water over night and wash hair with the mixture.
•          Practice yoga, helps in relieving stress and will increase blood circulation.

     ALLERGIES
Allergy is a response of the defense system to certain substances termed allergens, which usually are harmless. Allergy erupts when your body reacts to something it is abnormally sensitive to. When you come in contact with any allergen your body will defend itself by releasing substances known as antibodies. The ensuing reaction between antibodies and allergens trigger the release of 'Histamine' and other chemicals, which cause the symptoms of allergy.
Causes:
Environment: Grass pollen, animal hair, feathers, dust mites, chemicals and industrial pollutants and certain plants.
Diet:
Almost any food can bring on an allergic respons. The commonest being milk, cheese, eggs, nuts, fish and shell-fish, wheat and flour, chocolates and artificial colourants.
Other factors: You can be allergic to soaps, perfumes, detergents, insect bites, antibiotics, cosmetics and jewellery.
Symptoms:
Sneezing, running nose, cough, breathlessness are symptoms of asthma due to drugs or respiratory allergens. Itching, redness, hives, blisters, urticarias, swelling of face and body indicate a skin allergy or food allergy. Stomachache, nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting is seen in food allergies.
Pain and swelling of joints, stiffness is seen with drug allergies.
Rarely a patient may go into ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK within minutes of coming in contact with an allergen. This is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY.
Do's and Dont's:
1)      There are three steps to be taken when dealing with an allergy. Firstly, identify the cause or allergen Secondly, avoid it.
2)      Thirdly, if avoidance is impossible, treat the symptoms. Keep a diary and try to trace a pattern or relation between your allergic reaction and the allergen. Eg. Sneezing while doing housework could mean you are allergic to house dust.
3)      Do breastfeed your baby for the first 6 months to strengthen the immune system and avoid contact with allergens such as in cow's milk.
4)      Take steps to deal with stress, anxiety and tension as these can influence the frequency and severity of symptoms
5)      Good nutrition, balanced diet, adequate rest and relaxation will be beneficial.
Avoid Allergens by:-
1)      Choosing fresh unprocessed food.
2)      Checking food labels for additives
3)      Taking extra care like wearing gloves while using detergents and cleaners Clean your house, or vacuum frequently to get rid of dust mites, animal hair, etc.
4)      Remember that most allergens are in themselves harmless. It is your body's abnormal response and not the allergen that does the damage. So coming in contact with the offending substance will not hurt, as long as you can control your reaction to it.
5)      Inform the health care personnel about drugs to which you are allergic to
6)      In case of severe breathlessness, giddiness, skin rash feeble pulse - RUSH TO YOUR NEAREST PHYSICIAN.
7)      DO NOT SELF MEDICATE.
